Target Information

Arginase-1 (Arg1) is a 35 kDa enzyme that converts L-arginine to urea and L-ornithine, completing the urea cycle. The resulting polyamines are essential for cell proliferation and detoxification of protein degradation products. Arginase 1 regulates nitric oxide production by competing with NO synthase for arginine. It is expressed in liver, neutrophils, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC), and neural stem cells. In humans, expression occurs in blood neutrophils but not CCR3+ granulocytes. In mice, Arginase 1 is a hallmark of alternatively activated macrophages (M2a). It may be expressed in myeloid cells infiltrating tumors and is typically found in most hepatocellular carcinomas. Defects in Arginase 1 cause argininemia, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyperammonemia.
