Target Information
Fibroblast Growth Factor 4 (FGF4) is a member of the FGF family with broad mitogenic and cell survival activities. It plays key roles in stem cell growth and survival during embryogenesis, tissue regeneration, and carcinogenesis. FGF4 exhibits strong oncogenic transforming activity and acts as a potent angiogenic factor, expressed in several highly vascularized tumors and adult mouse testis, intestine, and brain.
Mouse studies suggest FGF4 functions in bone morphogenesis and limb development via the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. It also regulates neural progenitor cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation. Recent findings indicate a growth-promoting role in human embryonic stem cells and a feedback inhibition mechanism through a novel splice isoform that may promote differentiation at later developmental stages.
