Target Information
Transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-beta 3) is the third member of the transforming growth factor family of cytokines, along with TGF-beta 1 and TGF-beta 2. These cytokines are secreted as precursors consisting of a bioactive C-terminal domain and an N-terminal latency-associated protein (LAP). Cleavage of LAP produces the mature, disulfide-linked homodimeric protein.
TGF-beta 3 is highly conserved across species, showing 100% sequence homology between mouse and human, and exhibits cross-species activity. Members of this family are expressed by most cell types and have pleiotropic effects, including:
- Suppression of B- and T-cell effector activity
- Mediation of tissue healing
- Suppression of tumor proliferation
- Promotion of CD4⁺CD25⁺ T-cell expansion, suggesting a role in autoimmune protection
