Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to those of plasma origin. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium, plasma factor XIII releases B subunits and forms active factor XIIIa, which catalyzes crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot. Deficiency of factor XIII can cause bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
