Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. There are several isoforms differing in their primary structure and localization.
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed only at the gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma GPx, mainly expressed by the kidney and released into blood circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes and lipids.
- Mammalian GPx family members generally possess selenocysteine at the active site, except Cys-containing GPx3 and GPx5 isoforms.
