SOX9는 성 결정 및 Sertoli 세포의 분화에 관여하며, 연골형성(chondrogenesis)에 중요한 역할을 하는 전사인자입니다. 이 유전자의 전좌는 campomelic dysplasia를 유발할 수 있습니다. SOX9는 태아 생식선에서 고환 형성에 관여하며, 척수 발달 과정에서 neuron-glia 전환의 주요 분자 구성 요소로 작용합니다. 정상 발달 중에는 전립선 상피의 성장과 유지에 필수적이며, 전립선암에서는 종양 성장과 침습을 촉진하는 역할을 합니다. 또한 신경능선 전구세포 형성과 멜라닌 생성 조절에도 관여합니다. Northern blot 분석 결과, SOX9는 성인 고환, 심장, 태아 뇌에서 발현됩니다.
