Target Information
This gene encodes an activating transcription factor (ATF1), a member of the ATF subfamily and bZIP (basic-region leucine zipper) family. It regulates the expression of downstream target genes involved in growth, survival, and other cellular activities. The protein is phosphorylated at serine 63 by several serine/threonine kinases, enhancing its transcriptional activity and contributing to cell transformation. Chromosomal translocations involving this gene and FUS (chromosome 16) or EWSR1 (chromosome 22) generate chimeric proteins associated with angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and clear cell sarcoma. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 6.
