Target Information

The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. It is primarily expressed on T helper cells, but also found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. At the tissue level, CD4 expression is detectable in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 plays a key role in T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and the tyrosine kinase Lck. It may also contribute to neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
