Target Information
Cathelicidin is an epithelial-derived antimicrobial protein found in specific granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes of bone marrow, testis, and neutrophils.
These peptides are characterized by conserved pro-peptide sequences and are expressed in epithelial tissues and some myeloid cells of humans and animals.
LL-37/hCAP-18 is the only Cathelicidin found in humans, expressed in inflammatory and epithelial cells, and plays a crucial role in defense against bacterial infection in skin.
Beyond antimicrobial activity, Cathelicidins mediate innate and adaptive immunity, including endotoxin neutralization, angiogenesis, wound healing, and promoting neutrophil chemotaxis and mast cell recruitment.
Cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides are considered potential prototypes for innovative drugs targeting infection and immune modulation.
