Target Information
Cathelicidin is an epithelial-derived antimicrobial protein found in specific granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes of bone marrow, testis, and neutrophils. Cathelicidins are a family of antimicrobial peptides characterized by conserved pro-peptide sequences identified in epithelial tissues and some myeloid cells of humans and animals.
LL-37/hCAP-18 is the only Cathelicidin found in humans and is expressed in inflammatory and epithelial cells. It plays a vital role in defense against invasive bacterial infection in skin.
Beyond antimicrobial activity, Cathelicidins are involved in innate and adaptive immunity, including endotoxin neutralization, angiogenesis, wound healing, neutrophil chemotaxis, and mast cell recruitment.
These peptides are potential prototypes for innovative drugs that may treat infections and modulate immune responses.
