Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens central fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, so crystallins are made once and retained throughout life, resulting in exceptional stability.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups.
Crystallins contain seven regions: four homologous motifs, a connecting peptide, and N- and C-terminal extensions. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, symmetric proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after early development.
This gene encodes a protein initially classified as a beta-crystallin but is monomeric and more similar to gamma-crystallins. It represents the most significant gamma-crystallin in adult eye lens tissue. Mutations or aging can lead to cataract formation due to altered gamma-crystallins.
