Target Information
Nuclear lamins form a network of intermediate-type filaments at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear membrane. Two main subtypes of nuclear lamins exist — A-type and B-type lamins.
A-type lamins include lamin A, lamin C, and lamin Adel10, all produced by alternative splicing of the same gene.
B-type lamins (lamin B1 and lamin B2) are encoded by distinct genes.
Mutations in A-type lamins are associated with several rare but dominant genetic disorders, such as:
- Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
- Dilated cardiomyopathy with conduction-system disease
- Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy
A-type lamin expression is linked to cell differentiation, and their interaction with chromatin suggests a role in regulating differential gene expression.
