Target Information
Retinoic acid, a metabolite of vitamin A, is essential for normal organogenesis but acts as a teratogen at high levels during embryonic and fetal development. It functions through interaction with the nuclear protein retinoic acid receptor (RAR), part of the steroid and thyroid hormone receptor superfamily.
RAR regulates gene expression by binding to specific DNA response elements. There are three major RAR subtypes: alpha, beta, and gamma.
RAR gamma has two isoforms:
- RAR gamma-1: predominantly expressed in skin
- RAR gamma-2: found early in embryogenesis and in embryonal carcinoma cells
RAR gamma is also known as RARD, and the gene encoding RAR gamma-1 is NR1B3.
