EFNB3, a member of the ephrin gene family, is important in brain development and maintenance. EFNB3 expression is particularly high in several forebrain subregions, suggesting its pivotal role in forebrain function.
The EPH and EPH-related receptors form the largest subfamily of receptor protein-tyrosine kinases, mediating developmental events in the nervous system.
EPH Receptors typically have a single kinase domain and an extracellular region containing a Cys-rich domain and two fibronectin type III repeats.
Ephrins are divided into ephrin-A (EFNA) and ephrin-B (EFNB) classes: ephrin-A are GPI-anchored, while ephrin-B are transmembrane proteins. The Eph receptors are similarly divided based on structural similarity and ligand affinity.
