Target Information
ATF3 (Activating Transcription Factor 3) is a member of the mammalian activation transcription factor/cAMP responsive element-binding (CREB) protein family of transcription factors. It encodes a protein with a calculated molecular mass of approximately 22 kDa.
ATF3 generally represses transcription from promoters with ATF binding elements. An alternatively spliced form, ATF3 delta Zip, encodes a truncated protein lacking the leucine zipper dimerization motif and does not bind DNA. In contrast, ATF3 delta Zip may stimulate transcription by sequestering inhibitory co-factors. Alternative splicing of the ATF3 gene may play an important role in regulating target gene expression.
Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
