ATF5는 전사 인자로서 다양한 DNA 조절 요소(cAMP response element, ATF5-specific response element, amino acid response element)에 결합하여 유전자 전사를 조절합니다. 세포 생존, 증식, 분화에 중요한 역할을 하며, 특히 신경세포 발생과 피질 형성 과정에서 핵심적 기능을 수행합니다. 또한 BCL2, EGR1 등의 항-apoptotic 유전자 발현을 조절하고, 간세포 및 골형성 과정에도 관여합니다.
