Target Information

alpha-Internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the neurofilament triplet proteins NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, having similar protein sequence motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons contain alpha-internexin along with NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while in some neurons it is the only neurofilament subunit expressed.

Antibodies to alpha-internexin serve as unique probes for studying neuronal types and tracing their processes in tissue sections and culture. Its early developmental expression makes it a useful marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to the neuronal lineage. Potential applications in brain tumor studies remain to be explored.
