Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of the chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Nucleosomes consist of about 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of pairs of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). These nucleosomes further compact DNA into chromatin, regulating accessibility for processes such as transcription, DNA repair, and replication. Histone H2B also exhibits broad antibacterial activity.
