Target Information

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing membrane hyperpolarization through opening of a Cl⁻ channel associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R).
GABAA-Rs are key therapeutic targets for sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents, and are implicated in diseases such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The GABAA-R is a multimeric subunit complex composed of multiple alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, including splice variants. Coexpression of a gamma subunit is required for benzodiazepine modulation. Phosphorylation of beta subunits can modulate receptor function.
