단백질의 분해는 세포 내 단명 및 조절 단백질 수준을 유지하는 데 중요하며, 대사, 스트레스 반응, 항원 제시, 세포 표면 수용체 조절, 세포 주기, 전사 및 신호 전달 등 다양한 과정에 관여합니다.
유비퀴틴-프로테아좀 경로는 대부분의 세포질 및 핵 단백질을 분해하며, 26S 프로테아좀은 ATP 의존적 다중 서브유닛 복합체로 구성됩니다. 20S 프로테아좀 코어와 19S 조절 서브유닛으로 구성되며, 후자는 유비퀴틴화된 단백질을 인식하고 이를 20S 내부로 이동시키는 역할을 합니다.
유비퀴틴-프로테아좀 경로의 결함은 여러 유전 질환과 관련이 있으며, 예로는 낭포성 섬유증, Angelman 증후군, Liddle 증후군 등이 있습니다.
