Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes including arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins and activated by extracellular proteinases. The MMP-12 enzyme degrades soluble and insoluble elastin and may play a role in aneurysm formation and emphysema development. The gene is part of an MMP cluster localized to chromosome 11q22.3.
