Target Information
Cysteine protease ATG4B is encoded by the ATG4B gene and plays a crucial role in autophagy, a cellular process for maintaining homeostasis by degrading damaged organelles and proteins.
ATG4B cleaves the C-terminal amino acid of ATG8 family proteins (MAP1LC3, GABARAPL1, GABARAPL2, GABARAP) to expose a glycine residue necessary for conjugation to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and membrane insertion.
ATG4B is mainly expressed in skeletal muscle, brain, heart, liver, and pancreas.
