Target Information
PDGFRA is a cell surface receptor tyrosine kinase that binds members of the platelet-derived growth factor family. These growth factors are mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. The specific growth factor bound determines whether the functional receptor forms a homodimer or heterodimer, composed of both PDGF receptor alpha and beta polypeptides. Studies in knockout mice, where homozygosity is lethal, indicate that the alpha form of PDGF receptor is essential for kidney development, as heterozygous mice exhibit defective kidney phenotypes.
