Target Information

Mannose (or mannan)-binding lectin (MBL), also known as serum mannose-binding protein (MBP), initiates the lectin branch of the innate immune response by binding to the surface of potentially pathogenic microorganisms and activating complement fixation.
MBL functions in antibody-independent neutralization of pathogens. Mutations in human MBL are associated with immunodeficiency due to impaired complement activation.
MBL associates with MBL-associated serine proteases (MASP-1, MASP-2, MASP-3) and a truncated form (sMAP or MAp19) to activate the lectin pathway of the complement system. Activated MASPs cleave and activate downstream complement components.
MASP-3, an alternatively spliced product of the MASP-1 gene, may inhibit MASP-2 by competing for MBL binding.
