Target Information
The protein encoded by the SNRPN gene is a component of the small nuclear ribonucleoprotein complex, belonging to the snRNP SMB/SMN family. It plays a role in pre-mRNA processing and may be involved in tissue-specific alternative splicing.
This gene is part of a bicistronic transcript that also encodes the SNURF protein. Multiple transcription initiation sites and extensive alternative splicing occur in the 5′ untranslated region.
The 5′ UTR functions as an imprinting center, and alterations in this paternally-expressed region are associated with Angelman syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome due to imprinting defects.
