Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. BMPs are growth and differentiation factors originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo.
BMP4 plays a key role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression is associated with bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.
Alternative splicing in the 5’ untranslated region produces three variants that encode an identical protein.
