Target Information

Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (such as skin) and non-keratinizing (such as mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins are also present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins, ranging from 40–70 kDa in molecular weight and isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CKs are classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). All epithelial cells express at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
