Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8. Each human cytokeratin is numbered 1 to 20.
Different epithelia express cytokeratins that are characteristic of their type and degree of differentiation. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are increasingly used to distinguish various epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
