Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a key role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated expression induces apoptosis in different cell types.
Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize Myc-tagged proteins at either amino or carboxy termini. Amplification of c-Myc is found in lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification occurs in neuroblastomas.
Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is observed in Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative conditions.
Aberrant c-Myc expression is reported in tumors of multiple origins, including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
