Product Specific Information

The HI111 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD11a, a 180 kDa integrin alphaL, also known as lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) alpha chain. LFA-1, formed by non-covalent association of CD11a with CD18 (integrin beta2), is an adhesion molecule critical for lymphocyte and granulocyte function. Its ligands include CD54 (ICAM-1), CD102 (ICAM-2), and CD50 (ICAM-3). CD11a is expressed by all leukocytes.

Target Information

CD11a (LFA-1 alpha, ITGAL) and CD18 together form LFA-1, the αLβ2 integrin. CD11a is crucial for leukocyte adhesion and costimulatory signaling via ICAMs 1–3. It exists in low-affinity conformation on leukocytes and shifts to high-affinity upon stimulation, enabling tight ligand binding.

CD11a is involved in immune cell interactions, tissue-specific localization, differentiation, proliferation, and T-cell effector functions. Blocking CD11a is a therapeutic approach in inflammatory diseases; for example, Efalizumab (Raptiva) inhibits T-cell migration, and simvastatin binding to CD11a modulates immune activity. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist. Associated diseases include benign cephalic histiocytosis and leukocyte adhesion deficiency.
