Target Information
Guanylate cyclases belong to the adenylyl cyclase class-4/guanylyl cyclase family. There are two forms of guanylate cyclase:
- Soluble form (GCS or sGC): Acts as a receptor for nitric oxide (NO).
- Membrane-bound form (GC): Functions as a peptide hormone receptor.
GCS synthesizes cGMP and serves as the major receptor for NO, playing a crucial role in smooth muscle contractility, platelet reactivity, and neurotransmission.
It is a heme-containing heterodimer composed of one 72 kDa alpha subunit and one 65 kDa beta subunit. The heme moiety mediates NO activation and also binds carbon monoxide, which weakly stimulates the enzyme.
