Target Information
Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for the distribution of organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes within the cell. They play key roles in cell division, intracellular transport, and membrane trafficking events such as endocytosis and transcytosis.
KIF1C, a member of the KIF1/Unc104 family, is involved in the transport of mitochondria or synaptic vesicles in axons. The human KIF1C gene maps to chromosome 17p13 and encodes a 1,103 amino acid protein highly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle. Tyrosine phosphorylation is suggested to regulate KIF1C-mediated retrograde transport of Golgi vesicles to the endoplasmic reticulum. KIF1C can form homodimers and associate with 14-3-3 beta, gamma, epsilon, and zeta proteins. In mouse macrophages, KIF1C is required for anthrax lethal toxin resistance.
