Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation. Hepatocytes are the main source of EPO in the fetus, while in adults, interstitial kidney cells are the primary producers. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and has been detected at low levels in lung and brain tissue. Recent studies suggest EPO may also protect neuronal tissue and promote repair processes.
