Product Specific Information

Specificity: This antibody binds the human mesothelin protein, which is highly expressed in many human cancers, including the majority of pancreatic adenocarcinomas, ovarian cancers, and mesotheliomas.

Target Information

Mesothelin was originally identified as a differentiation antigen of mesotheliomas, ovarian cystadenocarcinomas, and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored, cell-surface glycoprotein predominantly secreted by mesothelial cells.
Although Mesothelin is expressed at restricted levels by normal mesothelial cells of pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal membranes, aberrant expression has been documented in cancers such as endometrioid uterine adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus, stomach, lung, and cervix.

Proteolytic cleavage of Mesothelin yields a soluble fragment, megakaryocyte potentiating factor (MPF), which stimulates megakaryocyte colony-forming activity of murine interleukin-3 in bone marrow cultures. MPF may contribute to megakaryocyte proliferation and platelet production regulation.

High expression in cancerous tissues compared to limited distribution in normal tissues suggests involvement in tumorigenesis. Both Mesothelin and MPF have been shown to promote tumor cell proliferation, migration, anchorage-independent growth, and tumor progression, implicating roles in heterotypic cell adhesion and metastasis.
