Target Information
Signal-mediated nuclear import and export occur through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), composed of approximately 50 unique nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin (NUP98) is produced by proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor, yielding both 98 kDa and 96 kDa forms localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC.
NUP98 functions as a docking site nucleoporin for transport substrates and is known to fuse with several genes in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (T-ALL).
It is located in the imprinted gene domain of 11p15.5, a region associated with tumor-suppressor activity and several cancers, including Wilms tumor and breast cancer.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, not all of which are fully characterized.
