Target Information
Thymosin-beta4 is a small, actin-sequestering protein belonging to the thymosin-beta family, found at high concentrations in spleen, thymus, and peritoneal macrophages. It regulates cytoskeletal organization by forming a 1:1 complex with globular actin (G-actin), inhibiting its polymerization into filamentous actin (F-actin).
This protein is also present in brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, testes, and heart, and can be synthesized by myoblasts and fibroblasts. It is expressed at varying levels in hemopoietic and malignant lymphoid cells.
Beyond actin regulation, thymosin-beta4 influences secretion of hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, inhibits macrophage migration, induces phenotypic changes in T cells during immune response, and modulates stem cell progression.
