Target Information
HIF-1 beta is one of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT) gene products.
Hypoxia plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of major human diseases such as myocardial and cerebral ischemia, cancer, pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
HIF-1 is a nuclear protein involved in mammalian oxygen homeostasis through posttranslational modification by prolyl hydroxylation. It forms a heterodimer composed of HIF-1 alpha and HIF-1 beta subunits.
Under normoxic conditions, HIF-1 alpha undergoes hydroxylation, ubiquitination, and degradation. Under hypoxic conditions, hydroxylation is inhibited, leading to increased transcriptional activity and accumulation of HIF-1 alpha.
In contrast, HIF-1 beta remains stable regardless of oxygen conditions.
Dysfunction of HIF-1 beta is associated with hypoxia and renal cell carcinoma.
