Target Information
MAPKAPK3 functions as an integrative element of signaling in both mitogen and stress responses. It acts as a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase)-activated protein kinase. MAP kinases, also known as extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), serve as integration points for multiple biochemical signals.
MAPKAPK3 is activated by growth inducers and stress stimuli. In vitro studies show that ERK, p38 MAP kinase, and Jun N-terminal kinase can phosphorylate and activate this kinase, highlighting its role in integrating mitogen and stress signaling.
MAPKAPK3 interacts with, phosphorylates, and represses the activity of E47, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor involved in regulating tissue-specific gene expression and cell differentiation.
