Target Information

The CYP17A1 gene encodes a cytochrome P450 enzyme involved in steroid biosynthesis. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and exhibits both 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities, making it a key enzyme in the production of progestins, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens. Mutations are associated with several disorders including isolated steroid-17α-hydroxylase deficiency, pseudohermaphroditism, and adrenal hyperplasia.
