PGAM1은 포스포글리세레이트 무타아제(phosphoglycerate mutase) 계열에 속하는 효소로, 포도당 및 2,3-비스포스포글리세르산(2,3-BPGA) 대사에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 해당효과(glycolytic pathway)에서 3-포스포글리세르산(3-PGA)을 2-포스포글리세르산(2-PGA)으로 가역적으로 전환하는 반응을 촉매합니다.
PGAM1 단백질은 이합체(dimeric) 효소로 존재하며, 조직에 따라 느리게 이동하는 근육형(MM), 빠르게 이동하는 뇌형(BB), 그리고 혼합형(MB) 이성체로 구성됩니다. PGAM1 유전자의 돌연변이는 근육 포스포글리세레이트 무타아제 결핍증(글리코겐 저장병 X형)을 유발할 수 있습니다. 재조합 인간 PGAM 단백질은 N-말단에 His-tag가 융합된 형태로 E. coli에서 발현되며, 전통적인 크로마토그래피 기법으로 정제되었습니다.
