Caspase-3는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) 계열의 단백질을 암호화하며, 세포 사멸(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 중요한 역할을 합니다. Caspase들은 비활성 전구체 형태로 존재하며, 절단 과정을 통해 활성형 효소로 전환됩니다.
이 단백질은 caspase-6, -7, -9를 절단 및 활성화하며, caspase-8, -9, -10에 의해 자체적으로 처리됩니다. 또한 Alzheimer’s disease 관련 amyloid-beta 4A precursor protein 절단에 관여합니다.
