This gene encodes the rate-limiting enzyme in the de novo guanine nucleotide biosynthesis pathway. It is essential for maintaining cellular guanine deoxy- and ribonucleotide pools required for DNA and RNA synthesis. The protein catalyzes the NAD-dependent oxidation of inosine-5'-monophosphate to xanthine-5'-monophosphate, subsequently converted to guanosine-5'-monophosphate. Up-regulated in certain neoplasms, suggesting a role in malignant transformation.
