Target Information

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper family. Three isoforms exist in mammals—SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c (ADD1), and SREBP-2—with distinct regulatory and functional roles.
SREBPs are synthesized as 120 kDa precursors in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. Upon activation, they translocate to the Golgi, where proteolytic cleavage generates a 60–78 kDa mature transcriptionally active fragment.
In liver and adipose tissues, SREBPs regulate lipid and cholesterol accumulation by inducing gene transcription related to these pathways. SREBP-1 primarily controls triglyceride synthesis, whereas SREBP-2 is more associated with cholesterol biosynthesis.
