Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. It functions similarly to ubiquitin, being bound to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which targets proteins for degradation, SUMO proteins are involved in various cellular processes such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. It becomes active after cleavage of the last two amino acids at the carboxy-terminus. Numerous pseudogenes and alternate transcriptional splice variants have been reported.
