Target Information

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein that targets cellular proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor protein consisting of polyubiquitin chains or a single ubiquitin fused to an unrelated protein.
This gene encodes a fusion protein with ubiquitin at the N-terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C-terminus. Upon expression, it is processed to generate free ubiquitin and ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit.
Ubiquitin-related fusion proteins such as ribosomal protein L40 and S30 are also known, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same proteins have been identified.
