Target Information
S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes about 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen both extra- and intracellularly, while neutrophils only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative properties and acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils.
Plasma concentrations increase in conditions with elevated neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease, and calprotectin can be detected in feces and other body fluids (plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, synovial fluid) during infection and inflammation.
