Background

This gene encodes coagulation factor III, a cell surface glycoprotein that enables cells to initiate blood coagulation cascades. It functions as a high-affinity receptor for coagulation factor VII, forming a complex that catalyzes the initiation of coagulation protease cascades via specific limited proteolysis. Unlike other cofactors that circulate as inactive precursors, this factor is fully functional when expressed on cell surfaces. It consists of three domains: extracellular, transmembrane, and cytoplasmic. No congenital deficiency has been described for this protein. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
