Target Information
AQP0 is the most abundant endogenous protein in the plasma membrane of lens fiber cells, functioning as a water pore and playing a role in fiber-fiber adhesion and lens organization.
It contains a unique pore constriction responsible for pore gating, holding only three water molecules spaced too far apart for hydrogen bonding.
The C-terminal domain undergoes extensive post-translational modifications, including truncations during lens aging, which may contribute to cataract formation.
