Target Information
REST (RE1-Silencing Transcription factor) is a transcriptional repressor that binds neuron-restrictive silencer element (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts neuronal gene expression by associating with corepressors mSin3 and CoREST, which recruit histone deacetylase to REST-regulated gene promoters. REST mediates repression by recruiting the BHC complex at RE1/NRSE sites, modifying chromatin through histone deacetylation and demethylation.
