Target Information
Defensins form a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides produced by neutrophils. Members of the defensin family share high sequence similarity. The DEFB1 gene encodes defensin beta 1, an antimicrobial peptide involved in epithelial resistance to microbial colonization. It is located near defensin alpha 1 and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis.
